South Korean opposition lawmakers have proposed legislation to end automatic eligibility for alternative military service for Asian Games gold medalists following controversy over athletes' celebrations at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games, local media reported Friday.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Joo Ho-young and nine other lawmakers from the main opposition People Power Party, would remove Asian Games gold medals as a qualification for alternative military service, according to The Korea Times. Olympic medalists would remain eligible under the proposed legislation.
The bill would also allow athletes and artists whose achievements significantly enhance South Korea's international standing to qualify for alternative service with Cabinet approval.
The lawmakers argued that differences in competition standards across Asian Games events had raised questions about fairness, while the prospect of avoiding regular military service was increasingly overshadowing sporting achievements.
The debate intensified after South Korea's men's football team celebrated winning its fourth consecutive Asian Games gold medal. Player Yang Min-hyeok acknowledged that avoiding military service had been his primary motivation, while teammate Park Seung-soo posted a photograph of himself wearing a military discharge cap.
Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul told lawmakers Wednesday that his ministry aimed to gradually reduce and ultimately abolish the exemption program. Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young had earlier pledged a comprehensive review of the system following public criticism, according to Yonhap News Agency.
South Korea requires most able-bodied men to serve between 18 and 21 months in the military. Under the existing system, qualifying athletes and artists can fulfill their obligations through alternative service arrangements rather than regular military duty.
