Belgium “strongly condemned” new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court on Friday, calling for EU action to protect the court's independence and those supporting its work.

"I strongly condemn the new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court," Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said in a statement posted on US social media platform "Seeking to cripple the Court's work denies victims a path to justice and puts those responsible for the gravest crimes beyond its reach," he added.
普雷沃表示，比利时已与欧盟其他成员国就如何支持该法院展开讨论，相关议题将于周一及即将召开的欧洲理事会上予以探讨。
Prevot said Belgium had initiated discussions on support for the court with EU counterparts, with the issue set to be addressed Monday and at the forthcoming European Council.

"We will press for concrete protection. The Court's independence cannot depend on whom it investigates," he said.

The Belgian foreign minister called for the activation of the EU Blocking Statute to protect the court and those supporting its work.

"Europe must act," Prevot said, stressing that the bloc must defend its ability to uphold international law without allowing foreign sanctions to dictate its decisions.

His remarks followed an announcement of new sanctions against the court by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio threatened to "end the ICC" unless it stopped what he described as its "threats."
