Prosecutors in Argentina's trial over Diego Maradona's 2020 death have requested a 12-year prison sentence for his personal physician, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque. They also asked for an eight-year sentence for psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, both accused of negligent homicide. The case, heard in San Isidro, has drawn intense public attention given Maradona's status as a national icon.

At the hearing in San Isidro, Buenos Aires province, prosecutors formally requested prison sentences for two members of Diego Maradona's medical team. Lead prosecutors asked for 12 years for Leopoldo Luque, the neurosurgeon who served as Maradona's personal doctor, and eight years for psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov. Both are on trial for negligent homicide over the football legend's death in November 2020.

Prosecutors argue that multiple health professionals failed to provide adequate care during Maradona's final weeks, spent at a rented house in Buenos Aires province. The medical team is accused of ignoring warning signs and leaving him without proper supervision. The trial had restarted after an earlier attempt collapsed amid controversy over a documentary project involving some officials overseeing the case.

Lawyers for Luque and Cosachov are expected to seek acquittal or lighter penalties when hearings resume; verdicts for the remaining defendants, including a psychologist and nursing staff, are still pending. The case remains one of the most closely watched legal proceedings in Argentina given Maradona's enduring status as a national sporting icon.
