More than half of Hong Kong’s working adults believe artificial intelligence will make their retirement path more unpredictable than previous generations, yet only one in five feel financially prepared for the shift, according to a survey by global asset manager T. Rowe Price.

About 55 per cent of the 1,004 Hong Kong residents surveyed, all aged 30 and above earning at least HK$15,000 (US$2,239) per month, expect AI-driven disruption to destabilise their long-term career and income trajectories.

Uncertainty was most pronounced among workers aged 30 to 39, with 61 per cent anticipating a rockier road to retirement, the survey found.

T. Rowe Price

“Retirement is becoming less of a single point in time and more of a journey,” said Raymond Chan, head of Greater China intermediary distribution at T. Rowe Price.

“AI adds another layer of uncertainty because it could enable some people to work longer or more flexibly, while prompting others to reskill, reduce their hours or rethink when they retire.”Despite widespread concern, financial planning has yet to keep pace. Only 21 per cent of respondents said they were “fully” or “substantially” prepared financially should AI alter their employment, income or retirement timing.

Although nearly 60 per cent estimated they would need over HK$5 million to retire with peace of mind – with 22 per cent targeting upwards of HK$10 million – just 15 per cent of respondents maintained a comprehensive retirement plan that was reviewed regularly.

Initial financial planning leaned heavily towards short-term buffers rather than long-term growth. To hedge against AI risks, 43 per cent of workers have expanded their emergency cash funds, whereas only 28 per cent had adjusted their retirement investment portfolios.

T. Rowe Price

“Holding too much of a long-term retirement portfolio in cash can leave purchasing power vulnerable to inflation,” said Wenting Shen, Global Investment Solutions Strategist and Portfolio Manager at T. Rowe Price.

“If people retire earlier, later or in stages, their investment horizon and risk needs may change too. That makes it important to have an investment framework that can adapt over time.”
