China and the European Union have agreed to discuss the bloc’s restrictions on imports of inverters, a key piece of clean technology, offering potential relief to Chinese firms facing curbs on sales to a major overseas market.
Last week’s trade talks between the two sides concluded with a 16-point accord headlined by Beijing’s agreement to slash millions of hybrid car exports. Brussels also agreed to “consult on market access issues” for items including inverters, China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement late Friday.
Inverters switch the direction of electrical current, allowing power from solar panels or batteries to flow to electricity grids. The EU in May imposed restrictions on imports of the equipment used in projects funded by Brussels. Its target was “high-risk suppliers” that could threaten electricity generation in the bloc.
In the latest accord, the EU clarified that its policy is country neutral, and that it will engage in further discussions with China on the issue. Investors took that as a positive development and shares of Sungrow Power Supply Co., one of the world’s largest makers of inverters, rose as much as 3.3% in Shenzhen. The company derived more than 70% of its revenue from overseas in the first half of the year.
