(KTLA) — Following coastal flooding in Southern California this week, fire officials are warning residents about a potentially dangerous consequence of saltwater exposure involving electric vehicles and other battery-powered transportation.
The Laguna Beach Fire Department said saltwater can damage lithium-ion batteries found in electric vehicles, hybrids, electric bicycles and scooters, potentially triggering fires days or even weeks after the initial exposure.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for portions of Orange, Riverside and Imperial counties as a result of post-Tropical Storm Rachel moving through the region and bringing widespread coastal flooding.

The storm has already battered coastal communities, including Long Beach, Newport Beach and Malibu, where powerful waves and unusually high tides have flooded streets, damaged infrastructure and prompted emergency measures.

In Long Beach, mandatory evacuations were ordered for homes along portions of Seaside Walk after several structures were deemed unsafe to occupy.

Along the Los Angeles County coastline, a coastal flood warning remained in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday, with forecasters warning that high tides approaching 8 feet and surf of 5 to 8 feet could produce significant flooding and beach erosion.
Officials warned that even vehicles that appear to be operating normally could pose a fire risk if floodwater reached their batteries or electrical components.
Residents who suspect their vehicle sustained saltwater damage, including those whose vehicles were partially submerged, are urged not to drive or charge them.
Instead, fire officials recommend contacting their insurance company, arranging for professional towing and having the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic qualified to service electric or hybrid vehicles.
The warning also applies to e-bikes and electric scooters that may have been exposed to coastal floodwaters.
According to the department, warning signs of a potentially dangerous battery include smoke, hissing or popping sounds and unusual heat. Anyone noticing those signs should immediately move away from the vehicle and call 911.
Officials cautioned residents against attempting to move a vehicle exhibiting those warning signs or trying to extinguish a battery fire themselves.
The department emphasized that the danger may not be immediately apparent, with battery fires potentially occurring long after floodwaters have receded.
