Corp. is planning to announce $2 billion in European investments in the next week, Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said at an event in Paris on the first day of a tour that will also bring him to London and Berlin.

That adds to the $8 billion the company has put into the continent in the last year, Huang said Tuesday. He also announced new funding in French startups Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment and Entalpic.

Huang, who is head of the world’s most valuable company and the biggest maker of the chips at the center of the AI boom, has pledged hundreds of billions of dollars in investments worldwide to speed up the adoption of the technology and its products. He arrives to the continent as the technology is facing increasing popular backlash. Concerns, ranging from AI models going rogue to the environmental impact of power-hungry data centers, are fueling calls to rein in development. Europe and the UK have sought to play a role in safeguarding the world against its possible harms. “Europe needs to get in the race,” Huang said at the event.

Huang has pushed back against calls to slow the development of AI, which he said will boost the economy and can be done safely. The heads of some of the AI companies, including Anthropic PBC CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI chief Sam Altman, are considering how to pace AI development after several high-profile breaches caused by agents.

Nvidia’s founder also pitched open-source models, which can be cheaper to use and more adaptable, as a way for Europe to catch up to more advanced AI in the US. Nvidia is a key partner to France’s Mistral AI, which designs open-weight AI. The chip designer invested in Mistral and is providing accelerators for the startup’s data centers. Mistral’s latest model was trained on 4,000 Grace Blackwell chips.

“Open models are important as they can be customized for languages and for your own sovereignty,” he said.

Huang has pushed the creation and adoption of open source models in recent investments. He wants to broaden the use of AI across the global economy and lessen dependence on the products of a small group of very large companies.

Doctolib is one of France’s best-known startups. Founded in 2013, it handles administrative work for doctors and medical workers and has become a staple for many European patients to book appointments.

Earlier this year, employees and early investors sold shares in the company worth about €300 million ($345 million). Bloomberg reported that the secondary share sale valued Doctolib at €3.6 billion, a steep discount compared to its last disclosed valuation of €5.8 billion in 2022 following an equity raise.

Pigment develops AI-powered business software, while Entalpic uses AI for chemistry and materials research.

Genesis focuses on AI for robots. Nvidia’s leader has predicted that physical AI, in the form of humanoid robots, will be the next giant market for his technology.
