Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo on Tuesday warned against countries taking an isolationist approach to artificial intelligence, saying governments and companies need to work together to manage the technology’s economic and security risks.
As AI advances rapidly, countries need to develop shared standards and common guidelines for the technology, Raimondo said at Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi.
“We can’t get it done alone,” she said. “In the age of AI, it’s also a bad bet for safety and security. No single country, no single company, no single industry can manage this technology alone.”While AI has enhanced productivity beyond expectations, governments and businesses have to help workers adapt, including through retraining, redeployment and safety nets.
“I’m not saying slow down AI, I’m not saying don’t implement AI,” Raimondo said. “I’m saying do it with an eye to the workers and make sure that no American worker, no Indian worker, no worker in any of our countries is left behind because of AI.”Raimondo made a similar warning in July, saying the US will lose the artificial intelligence race and face a public backlash if companies use the technology to boost profits without a plan for workers.
