Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she’s addressing Trump administration concerns about the growing US trade deficit with its southern neighbor in order to ink a bilateral deal, primarily by buying more American goods.
By Alex Vasquez and Gonzalo Soto Sheinbaum told reporters on Tuesday her government is working to grow US imports to achieve more balanced trade, following her most recent conversation with Donald Trump last month. At the time, she suggested that key issues for a US trade agreement were mostly resolved, but Trump told her Mexico hasn’t done enough to address the imbalance.
“We are doing many things to help reduce the deficit, above all, buying goods from the United States and stopping purchases from other countries, which will allow us to reduce the deficit,” Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference.
“President Trump knows that we are the country that buys the most from the United States and that those purchases have increased. But that is where we left things once again, and we agreed to continue working and meet again,” she added.
Mexico’s trade surplus with the US in goods has risen sharply in recent years. So far this year through August, it’s risen by 51% compared to the same period last year to more than $280 billion, according to central bank data.
The imbalance has proven a thorny problem for Sheinbaum, who also seeks to promote self-sufficiency with more domestic production including where current US import flows are large, like gasoline and grains. Trump has often accused countries that sell more goods to the US than they buy of engaging in unfair practices.
