Taiwan will monitor online rumors alleging that a pneumonic plague outbreak has spread from Russia to some Chinese provinces, Premier Cho Jung-tai said on Tuesday, according to the national Central News Agency. Cho said the island may strengthen existing quarantine measures in response to the rumors.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Wang Ting-yu asked during a legislative meeting whether the government was prepared to prevent the disease from spreading to Taiwan, citing frequent exchanges with mainland China. Cho said that the health authorities implemented border quarantine measures.

The government is "highly, highly concerned," Cho said, adding that relevant authorities would continue monitoring online information from China to identify any "suspicious" developments and determine whether quarantine measures should be strengthened accordingly.

Taiwanese health authorities have also contacted the World Health Organization to verify whether the Oct. 2 death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker at Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute was caused by pneumonic plague, Health Minister Shih Chung-liang said.
