The US wouldn’t have to try too hard to stabilize its debt if politicians could agree on deficit cuts, according to former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi.

Given how artificial intelligence is driving expansion in the world’s biggest economy, he considered last year that “you don’t need extraordinary efforts” to bring down the country’s mountain of borrowings.

“The numbers for the increase in productivity needed to have a debt-to-GDP ratio of about a 100% in 10 years time are not big at all,” Draghi told Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait on Thursday. “Everything seemed feasible, but it hinged on one condition, i.e. that the US deficit wouldn’t keep increasing.”

He spoke in the same week that International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva suggested that American authorities can’t just rely on strong growth to fix the country’s fiscal situation. Current ECB president Christine Lagarde also cited the size of the US deficit, saying that it “needs to be tackled.”Draghi, a former head of the Italian treasury and later prime minister during the pandemic, observed that the US shortfall keeps on rising and no-one in Washington is doing anything about it.

“It went up substantially in the last year, debt issuance reached new records and at the same time you don’t hear anything saying that some retrenchment effort in the medium term will be needed,” he said. “Unfortunately you don’t hear anything by both sides of the political discussion.”In February, the Congressional Budget Office warned the US debt-to-gross-domestic- product ratio in 2030 will exceed a record 106% set in 1946. Total US public debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, with a surge of a third in less than five years.
