Storm Trudy has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and is forecast to intensify as it approaches the Mexican coast this weekend.

Trudy has top sustained winds near 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour and could become a major hurricane on Friday, the US National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 4 a.m. New York time. The system is forecast to turn north or northwest within the next couple of days, bringing it closer to Mexico’s southwestern or west-central coast.

A severe El Niño has supercharged the eastern Pacific’s storm season, with Trudy marking the twentieth to form this year. A typical season produces about 15 named storms by the time it ends Nov. 30. At least eight have become major hurricanes, compared with about four in a normal season.
