Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Thursday officially opened the seventh term of the Welsh parliament, the Senedd, in Cardiff.

The king took part in the ceremony for the first time since becoming monarch, saying he was “privileged and proud” to have a special connection with Wales at the opening of the Senedd.

It was also the first opening of a Senedd term since nationalist Plaid Cymru became Wales’ largest party and took over the running of the government.

Earlier this year, Plaid Cymru secured a landslide victory in the Senedd election, ending Labour’s century-long position as Wales’ largest party.

Meanwhile, chants of “not my King” were heard as the royal car arrived, and police arrested one protester, Wales Online reported.

According to the BBC, the king spoke in his address about the “vital” role of endurance, referring to the summer heatwaves and expressing his “deep concern” for a “rapidly changing planet.”
