People’s Party chief Alberto Núñez Feijóo publicly offered his support on Thursday for the former Bank of Spain governor. who currently heads the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements.

“After Christine Lagarde’s good performance at the ECB, we need a successor who is solid, reliable, experienced and a respected economist,” he said at a press conference in Brussels. “In my opinion, Pablo Hernández de Cos is the right person.”That endorsement is all the more crucial given that the PP is currently leading polls before the Nov. 29 election. Spanish premier Pedro Sánchez last month proposed De Cos as a successor to Lagarde, the current ECB president, who has signaled that she may leave her post early.

It’s not a big surprise that De Cos got the PP’s backing, considering that the same party also appointed him to the Bank of Spain’s helm back in 2018.

Such an outcome would end 8 1/2 years of Socialist-led government in Spain.
