New York City Comptroller Mark Levine on Thursday defended his decision not to use the city’s pension funds to invest in Israeli bonds, after the Jewish Democrat faced mounting criticism for backtracking on a key campaign promise.
Levine, who controls how some $2 billion of the city’s pension funds are invested, has faced backlash since he said in an interview earlier in the week that he would opt not to purchase the bonds. Some Jewish leaders accused him of breaking a pledge he made during last year’s comptroller race to restart buying Israeli bonds and said it could add further fuel to a rise in antisemitism.
