Indonesia’s richest tycoons are set to lose more than $6 billion in a single day as the threat of exclusion from major global indexes highlights mounting concerns over the country’s appeal to international investors.
The decline in the wealth of Indonesia’s leading tycoons, tracked by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, followed a Thursday warning by MSCI Inc. that the country’s emerging-market status was in jeopardy. The move has raised the specter of foreign-investor withdrawals, triggering a selloff that pushed the Jakarta Composite Index to its worst day since January 1998.
At the core of MSCI’s proposed reclassification, flagged as early as January, are longstanding concerns over market governance and transparency. Many of Indonesia’s largest listed companies are tightly controlled and thinly traded, a structure that investors say can distort index performance and heighten the risk of market manipulation. In response, the government has outlined measures aimed at increasing the free float of listed firms and broadening shares available to public investors.

“It’s all interlinked,” Arjun Ajwani, research analyst at PT Infovesta Kapital Advisori, said of the tycoons’ decline in fortune. “A lot of wealth is concentrated in the shares of their companies.”
