PBC has opened a line of communication with New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, following his letter earlier this week calling for the artificial intelligence lab to delay its initial public offering.

Levine’s letter dated Wednesday, addressed to Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, urged the company to pause the listing process until it fully and transparently addresses the AI safety and governance concerns it has raised. It said last month’s morally binding safety accord with the Trump administration and AI companies including Anthropic was insufficient to meet the moment.

The comptroller looks after the city’s fiscal health and oversees public pension funds with more than $325 billion in assets. Some of those funds are invested in index-tracking funds, according to Levine, who said they assume “the indexes will rush Anthropic in.”Anthropic is planning to go public as early as next month in an IPO that could meet or exceed the amount raised by SpaceX in its record-setting debut, people familiar with the matter have said. Anthropic met with selected investors at its headquarters on Wednesday and disclosed it made $16.8 billion of revenue in the third quarter of this year, Bloomberg News reported.

Anthropic should prioritize establishing a governance regime to match concerns raised by the company itself and industry researchers, he wrote in his letter.

“Some people are making the opposite point. That if they delay their IPO, then that in itself could be a problem for the market,” Levine said. “I worry about going public and then having an incident.”In an essay last month, Amodei called on the AI industry and governments to co-operate to slow the pace at which AI models are improving and address safety risks from the technology including potential loss of control, serious economic disruption and that AI tools could be misused for cyberattacks and terrorism. A spokesperson for Anthropic didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
