A man was shot and killed in the New York City subway on Saturday afternoon, police confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The shooting happened at the 53rd Street and 7th Avenue station in busy Midtown Manhattan just after noon, according to the NYPD.

Hassen Pinchback from Orlando, Florida, told Fox News Digital he witnessed the incident and that everyone started running after hearing gunshots. "It was like a stampede," he said.

Later Saturday, the NYPD released images of the suspect, writing, "an unidentified individual approached an unidentified male on the northbound E train platform at the 53 Street/7 Avenue subway station in the confines of the Midtown North Precinct/Transit District 1, displayed a firearm and discharged it, striking the victim once in the chest. The individual fled the location on foot, traveling northbound on 7 Avenue."

The grainy photos showed the suspect wearing a red hoodie and red pants, black puffy vest and a black face mask.
