Japan’s next-day spot electricity price hit the highest in nearly four years as elevated fuel costs coincided with lower power generation due to scheduled maintenance.

The nationwide price surged more than a quarter on a weekly basis to 31.15 yen ($0.19) a kilowatt-hour on Monday, according to data from Japan Electric Power Exchange. Spot prices rose across all major power-consuming regions, with Tokyo clocking an advance of 19% from a week earlier. Kansai and Chubu prices climbed 61% and 19% over the same period, respectively.

Continuing fuel supply disruptions due to the US-Iran war have spiked prices of liquefied natural gas, a key fuel in Japan’s energy mix, and prompted some countries to pivot back to the energy security afforded by coal.

However, that higher demand, coupled with lagging supply from top producer Indonesia, has boosted coal prices too. Benchmark Newcastle futures have been on an upward trend since late August, reaching $150.4 per ton last Friday, about 30% higher than the level seen just before the outbreak of the war in Iran.

The tight fuel supply conditions coincided with lower power generation in Japan, where available capacity for Monday was down about 12% from the same day a month earlier, as some facilities have entered scheduled maintenance ahead of winter, according to JEPX data.
