After completing a master’s degree in data science at Pace University in New York in May last year, Tarun returned to India in October, saying frequent changes in US visa rules and employer sponsorship requirements had made it difficult for him to find a job in the world’s largest economy.
Tarun, who is from the southern Indian city of Tirupati, felt returning home was a more prudent move than pursuing a job in the US indefinitely.
“I got a job within one month here [Bengaluru] with an American engineering company,” he said, without giving further details about his job. “At the end of the day, my decision is about my happiness. I am close to my friends and family.”Tarun’s experience mirrors a debate over whether growing uncertainty surrounding US immigration rules could spur more Indian professionals to return home, with prominent figures in India’s tech industry weighing in on the issue.
In a viral social media post, Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and chief scientist of Chennai-headquartered cloud software company Zoho Corporation, urged Indian professionals in the US to return, arguing that India could turn the increasingly hostile climate in Washington towards foreign talent into a valuable opportunity to grow its technological capabilities.

“Indians have made a major contribution to America’s technological prowess. Yet, a big part of America no longer wants us. Indians who are on a visa in the US face the painful prospect of uprooting the life you have built with hard work,” Vembu wrote on October 9.
“Let this be the birth pains of a bold new future. Come back, let’s build India,” he said.
October 9, 2026 The US is home to the world’s largest Indian diaspora, estimated at between 5.8 million and 6.1 million people as January, many of whom hold senior positions at global technology companies.
Former Indian education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has backed Vembu’s call to contribute to India’s tech growth, emphasising the need to strengthen local capabilities and foster innovation.
“With confidence in our talent and a commitment to building indigenous capabilities, we can help shape the future of technology,” he wrote on social media.
The posts have raised expectations of Indian tech talent to accelerate innovation in India.
“It would be great if the government took more initiative to support professionals because there are a lot of highly talented Indians who are in the US. Many of them are struggling with visa pressures,” said Tarun.
On October 8, the US administration suspended the Permanent Labour Certification programme, a key step for foreign professionals to work in the US and potentially obtain permanent residency under an employer-sponsored process, affecting Indian companies such as Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, as well as US giants including Microsoft and Adobe.
Speaking on the move on the same day, US Vice-President J.D. Vance accused major companies of fraudulently bringing in lower-paid foreign workers whom he described as “indentured servants” instead of employing Americans. India’s Ministry of External Affairs slammed his remarks as “deeply offensive” the following day.
“We believe that such descriptions are unwarranted and ignore the fact that Indian professionals in the United States are highly educated and skilled contributors to its economy and innovation ecosystem,” it said in a statement.
Vance later clarified that his remarks were criticism of American companies and the visa system rather than of workers.
Indian professionals said that his remarks showed a lack of respect towards them.
“A professional is not ‘cheaper’ because they were born in India, China, Brazil or anywhere else. Their salary may be different. Their immigration status may be different. But their education, experience, expertise, ambition and dignity are not cheaper,” Dhananjay Ramakrishnappa, a manager of operations at Bengaluru-based software firm Flexara, said in a social media post, which also mentioned that he had previously worked in the US for 13 years.
“What worries me even more is the fear that many immigrants now feel about simply travelling home to see their families,” he said.
He said that a US-based family friend did not travel to India to attend her mother’s last rites because she feared that she would not be able to come back.
Washington’s curbs against foreign professionals could tighten further as it is reportedly examining a proposal to levy a US$70,000 fee on international students seeking post-graduation work authorisation.
Ramakrishnappa, who returned to India in 2017 after working in senior US-based executive roles with Microsoft, told This Week in Asia that Indian-origin professionals who had spent a decade or two working in the US tech sector could become successful entrepreneurs in India.
Subbu K., head of technology at New York-based start-up Trust Guard AI, however, said he was torn between whether to stay in the US or return to India. His daughter, who is studying in a US high school, might not be keen to head home, he added.
“I would love to do that [return to India] because it gives me the best of both worlds,” said Subbu, who still holds an Indian passport after spending over two decades working in the US tech sector.
Nonetheless, tech professionals and analysts say India has to take steps to lure more tech talent home.
Subbu worried about red tape in India, citing how a friend of his spent around eight months to get clearance from Indian regulators to start a business, compared with as fast as within a day in the US.
Vivek Mishra, deputy director of the strategic studies programme at the Observer Research Foundation, said the significant salary gap between what Indian tech professionals could earn in the US and India could be a deterrent.
“There has to be a calculated outreach to these people. Otherwise it will be just a slogan,” he said.
Uday Chandra, professor of political science at India’s Ashoka University, said appealing to Indian talent to return home based on “innate patriotism” alone would not work.
“Ultimately, highly skilled professionals will go wherever their talents are valued and they can pursue their ambitions. India will need to compete for such talent,” he added.
