The discreet leader is behind a movement that has been destabilizing oil markets for weeks, after Houthi forces seized control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait and targeted Saudi Arabia with drones and missiles. Each week, al-Houthi appears in videos released on social media and broadcast on giant screens set up in northern Yemeni cities. Carefully staged, these videos show him from the front, a Yemeni keffiyeh draped over his shoulders and an imposing jambiya – a large, curved ceremonial dagger – pressed against his abdomen.

If there were any doubt as to where he stands, to his right in the frame, a small sign displays his movement's slogan: "Allah is the greatest, death to America, death to Israel, curse upon the Jews, victory for Islam."
