Google says its new Pine Island, Minnesota data center will add clean power to the local grid without raising costs for other electricity customers. Energy experts and nearby residents remain skeptical that the aging grid can absorb the project without strain.

Google has begun building a large artificial intelligence data center in Pine Island, a small town in southern Minnesota, as part of a nationwide expansion of AI computing capacity. The company says the project will bring new clean energy generation online and will not shift costs onto other ratepayers in the region.

Grid engineers and local residents have voiced doubts about that claim, noting that the aging regional power network already strains during peak demand and that a single large data center can draw as much electricity as a small city. Some worry new transmission lines and substations needed to serve the facility could ultimately be paid for through higher household bills.

The dispute reflects a broader tension playing out across the United States, where utilities are racing to connect dozens of AI data centers to grids built decades before the artificial intelligence boom. Regulators in several states are now reviewing how such projects should share the cost of upgrades.
