Inc. is committed to staying in the UK even if the government chooses to raise the bank surcharge in its next budget, according to the firm’s UK chief executive officer, Tiina Lee.

A decision to increase bank taxes would be “disappointing news,” Lee said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. “But, of course, it’s not everything. It is important that the government maintains fiscal responsibility.”Banks are eagerly waiting for the budget later this month, when Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey is expected to raise taxes on lenders to fund cost-of-living support for voters and help stabilize the UK’s public finances.

“Of course, we have to wait until next week,” she said. However, “it does feel as if the directional travel is a little bit clearer.”

Executives of foreign banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s Jamie Dimon, have criticized the idea of levying additional bank taxes, arguing such a move would stifle growth and competitiveness. Dimon said earlier this year that the firm could scrap its plans for its new London headquarters if the government implemented policy that was “hostile to banks.”Citi has no plans to reduce its presence in London, where it recently opened its redeveloped headquarters in Canary Wharf, Lee said. “We’re not going anywhere,” she said.

For UK CEOs and companies, it’s important to have “policy certainty” and “consistency,” which hopefully the budget will bring, Lee said. That’s imperative to help companies make long-term decisions around the UK.
