Holdings Inc. is weighing expanding its wealth management operation into Switzerland, according to people with knowledge of the matter, a move that would push it into the backyard of the world’s largest wealth manager UBS Group AG.

Nomura, Japan’s biggest brokerage, is considering the potential size of the operation though no final decision has been made and the firm hasn’t applied for regulatory approval, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private.

A spokesperson for Nomura said the firm doesn’t comment on “rumors or speculation.”The push would take Nomura onto the home turf of UBS and a long list of peers such as Julius Baer, Banque Lombard Odier & Cie SA, Banque Pictet & Cie SA and a flurry of foreign private banks that run wealth management operations in Switzerland or have been considering to reenter the market. Standard Chartered Plc, for instance, said in May that it scored approval to open up an office in Geneva.
