Group AG Chief Executive Officer Ola Källenius warned that the European Union’s push to shield its car industry risks driving costs even higher and creating distortions across global supply chains.
A modern car contains thousands of components sourced from “every single corner of the world” to squeeze efficiencies, Källenius said Wednesday at the Berlin Global Dialogue. Adding restrictions would make production more expensive, even as they improve resilience, he said.
“You create resilience — a good thing — but you drive costs upwards,” Källenius said. “It’s a balancing act.”Europe cannot become “an island” that stops doing business with major partners including the US, China, Japan, South Korea and India, he added.
The EU last week made progress on its plans to favor “Made in Europe” car production. The new set of regulations under discussion is designed to provide a level playing field for carmakers like Volkswagen AG and Renault SA who face intense competition from Chinese vehicle imports. The potential accord also risks putting trading partners like Japan and South Korea at a disadvantage.
Europe’s struggling carmaker are getting more political back of late. This month, the EU and China in principle agreed on a deal that will limit China’s imports of hybrid cars to the region, after shipments surged. The plan is an important test case for the EU that’s seeking to address its growing trade imbalance with China, and could shape its approach for other sectors like pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
The Mercedes chief urged the EU to pursue more trade agreements, praising efforts to complete a long-delayed accord with South America and advance negotiations with India and other partners. At the same time, Europe shouldn’t be naive about the return of protectionism after decades in which globalization largely went unchallenged, he said.
The warning carries added weight because Källenius also serves as president of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, the region’s main auto lobby. His comments highlight a tension for automakers: they want Brussels to defend them against unfairly subsidized imports without imposing local-content rules and supply-chain restrictions that make European production more expensive.
