Robotic mower maker Husqvarna AB expects to reduce the size of its workforce owing to an upcoming transfer and outsourcing of some production away from Europe.
“Will people be affected?”Chief Executive Officer Glen Instone said in an interview after the Swedish company’s third quarter report. “Yes, but it’s too early to speculate on how many. There are many moving parts.”The manufacturing of selected Husqvarna-branded battery handheld products will shift to internal facilities and external partners in Asia, the Stockholm-based group said as part of its report on Wednesday.
Shares tumbled as much as 11% in the Swedish capital, reaching their lowest level since 2012, with earnings falling short of expectations amid weakness in the European market — where widespread drought and soft consumer demand caused its Forest & Garden division to suffer a 10% organic sales decline.
Instone also said that geopolitical headwinds and uncertainty will continue to weigh on consumer sentiment, adding that some channel partner inventories are slightly higher than he would like.
“We switch seasons now, more into chainsaws, handheld products and construction, so we’re probably going to have some different challenges in the fourth quarter,” he said.
