The US president raged at The Independent’s Andrew Feinberg after he asked him questions about his golf course and his new tip-off hotline designed to expose fraudsters.

Mr Trump said the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive programme (Whip) offered rewards of $30,000 (£22,500) to expose alleged government fraud.

Mr Feinberg provoked Mr Trump after questioning why someone would use Whip when an existing centuries-old programme offered a far higher reward.

Footage of the outburst showed Mr Feinberg trying to speak a number of times while being told to “ssh” by an increasingly irate Mr Trump, before the US president lashed out and told him: “What’s wrong with you? Are you a sick person? I actually think there’s something wrong with you.”Donald Trump shushes the journalist While Mr Trump has attacked and insulted journalists on a number of occasions, such an uncontrolled outburst is rare and comes at a tense time for the president.

He is known to attack journalists, particularly women, after first finding out which outlet they work for.

His administration has made a number of attacks on the press, including suing multiple publications, banning others and threatening to get rid of the White House press briefing room.

Mr Trump’s popularity has hit record lows, and the Republican Party faces heavy losses in the November midterm elections.

An Ipsos poll released on Tuesday showed that just 31 per cent of Americans approved of Mr Trump, with 66 per cent disapproving.

Kimberley Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, lost her job following reports that she had asked a donor to pay off a $100,000 (£75,000) credit card bill.

Paolo Zampolli, a long-time confidant of the president, was pushed out of the state department following a feud with Christopher Landau, the deputy secretary of state.

Internationally, the war Mr Trump started in Iran has not been resolved, and he is facing frustration abroad over his increasingly pro-Russian stance on the war in Ukraine.

“I decided to call an audible when a reporter posted that Trump and vice-president JD Vance planned to unveil a new programme and ‘tip line’ to award so-called ‘whistleblowers’ bounties of up to $30,000 for exposing what the administration believes to be ‘fraud’,” Mr Feinberg later recounted in a first-person piece about the exchange.

“For doing my job, I became the target of Trump and his team.”Mr Feinberg wrote that Mr Trump pretended not to know who he was, despite having spoken with him on the phone multiple times and winking at him earlier that day.

The president eventually threatened him when he asked about his plans to renovate a popular Washington golf course, he said.

“I don’t know who the hell you are, but you better be careful,” Mr Trump told the journalist.

Mr Feinberg was later called a “mongoloid moron” – an offensive term for someone with disabilities – on the White House’s Rapid Response social media account, and an “imbecile” by JD Vance.

Andrew Feinberg says he became the target of Donald Trump and his team for doing his job On Monday, Mr Trump attacked a reporter from the conservative publication Daily Wire after they asked about riots in France.

“I think that’s fake news. Who are you with?” he said, before his demeanour changed when he found out where she was from. “Oh, The Daily Wire is good,” he laughed. “Sorry. Daily Wire is good.”Elsewhere at the conference, Stephen Miller, the White House chief of staff, went on a tirade about alleged Somali fraud in Michigan, while Mr Trump threatened that Ilhan Omar, a Somali Democratic congresswoman, could go to jail.

Mr Miller claimed that “refugees, illegal aliens and foreigners” who “came to this country to loot and plunder us” were now buying Mercedes and BMWs and flying first class.

Asked whether Ms Omar could be deported over federal investigations into her immigration records, Mr Trump said she could instead be sent to prison.

“She’s a sick, very dishonest person who hates our country,” he said, before calling Somalia a “real s---house”.
