NAGOYA, Japan -- Toyota Motor will compete in the Dakar Rally this coming January in a hydrogen fuel cell version of the Hilux pickup truck, putting its latest technology to the test over punishing terrain.

The hydrogen-powered rally Hilux is based on the same platform as the gasoline-powered version. Two next-generation fuel cell stacks generate 400 kilowatts of power -- roughly equivalent to three Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicles.
丰田在新闻稿中表示，使用新车全称的“DKR GR FC海拉克斯”目前已建造完成，正在进行动态测试，为竞技首秀做准备。
"Construction of the DKR GR FC Hilux is now complete and it is undergoing dynamic testing prior to its competitive debut," Toyota said in a news release, using the new truck's full name.

Gaseous hydrogen is stored in four onboard hydrogen tanks of the same high-pressure type used in the Mirai.

The event moved to Saudi Arabia in 2020. It takes place over two weeks, crossing roughly 8,000 kilometers of desert environment and wilderness.

A new competition category was established in 2024 to test next-generation vehicles over a total distance of 1,000 km. That year and in 2025, Toyota entered compact hydrogen-powered vehicles developed with such partners as Honda Motor and Suzuki Motor. In 2027, Toyota will compete in this category on its own for the first time.
