TOKYO -- Top Japanese banks are turning to India for artificial intelligence and other tech tools to deliver services faster as digital competition heats up.

Another big Japanese bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, has been consolidating system development in India. It established a dedicated subsidiary in October 2025 to handle data management and administrative work for operations across Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Japanese online bank PayPay Bank plans to transfer its core banking system to a cloud-based platform and establish an in-house operating structure by fiscal 2028.

India, the most populous nation, has the world's largest IT engineer workforce with roughly 5 million engineers, followed by the U.S. with 4.4 million, China with 3.42 million and Japan with 1.54 million, according to fiscal 2025 estimates compiled by Japanese staffing firm Human Resocia.
