The second day of the European Parliament's session in Strasbourg had just begun on Wednesday, October 21, when police entered the fourth floor of the Louise-Weiss building, where the offices of the secretary general of the Patriots for Europe, a far-right parliamentary group led by France's Rassemblement National (RN), are located. Investigators searched the premises for evidence supporting suspicions of financial crimes involving Identity and Democracy (ID), the RN-led group that preceded Patriots from 2019 to 2024.
The search, carried out by France's Central Office for Combating Corruption and Financial and Tax Offenses, was revealed at midday on Wednesday by the head of the RN delegation in the European Parliament, MEP Jean-Paul Garraud, in a post on X. A source close to the investigation confirmed that the raids targeted Belgian national Philip Claeys, a former member of the far-right Vlaams Belang party who became the key administrator for the RN's parliamentary groups. Belgian police also raided his offices in Brussels, the European Parliament's other seat. When contacted, Claeys did not immediately respond. He remains secretary general of Patriots, which is chaired by RN president Jordan Bardella.
