Inc. appointed Lee Matheson, a partner at EdgePoint Investment Group Inc., to its board on Wednesday, adding a longtime shareholder at a time when the company has attracted takeover interest.

In a statement Wednesday, Matheson said he looked forward to working with management and the rest of the board on “the shared goal of unlocking Mattel’s intrinsic value for the benefit of all shareholders.”Shares of Mattel, the maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars, have been under pressure in recent years as costs to import toys have risen and consumers seek more online pursuits, like video games.
