KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian chip designer SkyeChip has joined a SoftBank-backed effort to develop next-generation memory for artificial intelligence, gaining a role in a Japanese semiconductor project that also involves Intel.

The company, which listed on Bursa Malaysia in May, said in a statement on Tuesday that it will provide design and engineering support and custom intellectual property, including technology used to enable data transfer between memory and processors, to Saimemory, a Tokyo-based subsidiary of SoftBank Corp., for its Z-Angle Memory, or ZAM, program.

The technology is being developed for data centers used to train and run large AI models, with the aim of increasing memory capacity and data transfer speeds while reducing power consumption. The engagement puts SkyeChip into a project that SoftBank has identified as part of its efforts to develop advanced semiconductor technology in Japan and strengthen the country's global competitiveness.

"Today AI computing is limited by the memory wall, and SkyeChip's memory interface technology is the door through that wall," SkyeChip Chief Executive Fong Swee Kiang said in a statement.

The "memory wall" describes a computing bottleneck in which processors can perform calculations faster than memory can supply the data they need. ZAM seeks to address those constraints as AI systems require greater capacity and faster access to data.

Saimemory is SkyeChip's first Japanese client. SkyeChip reported revenue of 49.6 million ringgit ($12.1 million) for the April-to-June quarter, with customers in the U.S. and China accounting for nearly 97% of sales, underscoring the potential for Japan to diversify its customer base.

"Saimemory is the first Japanese client of SkyeChip and we hope to secure more Japan clients and projects moving forward," the company told Nikkei Asia. SkyeChip said its experience in designing silicon intellectual property and silicon products, alongside its role in advancing next-generation memory technology, differentiated it from other suppliers.

SkyeChip currently serves the Japanese market from Malaysia but plans to establish an office in Japan, as disclosed in its initial public offering prospectus. It did not provide a timeline.

The company is also one of 17 designers participating in Rapidus CORE, an ecosystem aimed at supporting advanced semiconductor development and manufacturing. SkyeChip will earn revenue from engineering and design support as well as its ZAM intellectual property. It did not disclose the value of the engagement with Saimemory, the expected earnings contribution or whether it would receive royalties following commercialization.

SoftBank announced Saimemory's collaboration with Intel in February, targeting prototypes in the fiscal year ending March 2028 and commercialization in fiscal 2029. That program draws on technology and expertise validated through Intel's next-generation memory research.

In April, Saimemory said its joint development proposal with Intel had been selected to receive support from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, known as NEDO.

Saimemory leads that project, with Intel as a joint contractor and Japanese research institute Riken, a National Research and Development Agency, as a research partner. It also secured Series A funding from investors including Fujitsu, the Development Bank of Japan, Riken and SoftBank. The company is aiming to commercialize ZAM and license the technology to AI infrastructure providers and memory manufacturers. Its performance and power-efficiency objectives remain development targets.

SkyeChip began operating in 2019 and develops memory interfaces and technology that enables communication within and between chips, targeting high-performance computing and AI applications. SkyeChip and Saimemory said the engagement is intended to build a long-term partnership toward the commercialization of ZAM.

"We expect SkyeChip's technical expertise and extensive experience to play an extremely important role in our efforts to realize ZAM, an innovative next-generation memory technology," said Saimemory Chief Executive Hideya Yamaguchi.
