Israel must act in the coming years to take a lead in the global nuclear fusion industry before supply chains take shape, Israel's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said on Thursday.
By Steven Scheer The ministry said nuclear fusion is poised to become one of the world's primary energy sources in the coming decades, in a market worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
The report cites Israeli strengths in high-power lasers, radio frequency electronics, advanced materials, artificial intelligence, power electronics and robotics. Some grew out of the country's defence and high-tech industries.
Shahar Dolev, a senior official in the ministry's Policy Planning and Strategy Division, calls this a "strategic opportunity to join the global race for nuclear fusion development" and a chance to make Israel "a leading technological powerhouse in this domain." Fusion generates heat by smashing atoms together at extremely high temperatures, the same process that powers the sun. It could eventually produce large amounts of clean power with little radioactive waste, unlike today’s fission reactors.
Dolev said rising energy demand makes fusion "a true breakthrough" for meeting global electricity needs over the medium to long term.
According to the Fusion Industry Association, fusion companies raised a record $4.48 billion worldwide in the 12 months to July 2026, mostly from private investors. Cumulative funding since 2021 reached $14.24 billion.
The ministry says that combining public and private investment with Israel's existing scientific and entrepreneurial strengths could let it "play a significant role in shaping what appears to be the next energy revolution." It proposes three investment pathways, from expanding the Israeli Institute for Nuclear Fusion and Hot Plasma to a comprehensive national program with a budget of up to 2 billion shekels ($644 million).
The ministry believes the first commercial power plants could connect to the grid in the 2030s, with a global market worth hundreds of billions of dollars emerging between 2040 and 2050.
Israeli companies include nT-Tao, which is developing a compact fusion reactor, and FusionMantle, which focuses on reactor core components.
