Good morning. A tidal wave of retirements, some the easy way (Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Michael McCaul), others the hard way (Sens. John Cornyn and Bill Cassidy), is going to wipe out more than 800 years of combined congressional experience from Capitol Hill next year. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? We will soon find out.

There is a crush of lawmakers exiting stage left (and right) in a moment when many American voters have lost faith in government and believe U.S. politics is corrupt and serves only the well-connected.

There are nearly 50 members of the House of Representatives who aren’t seeking re-election (and a handful more who are running for Senate, but I don’t count them in my tally). And then there’s another dozen U.S. senators who aren’t seeking re-election either.

Four of the lawmakers (Pelosi, Dick Durbin, Steny Hoyer and Mitch McConnell) have been in Congress since the 1980s.

The risk with all these lawmakers leaving is: experience. Many of them were here for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the 2008 financial crisis, debt-ceiling squabbles and numerous other episodes when Washington had to rally together to deal with a crisis.

On the flip side: Government debt has grown and grown. America has become more polarized. Congress’s stature has shrunk. Maybe it’s time for some new people?

L. Louise Lucas: The longtime Virginia state senator has been charged by the Justice Department with running a criminal enterprise.

Calley Means: Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. top adviser is leaving the Trump administration after the White House slowed down Kennedy’s food agenda.

President Trump’s Friday: He will travel to Fort Myers, Fla., in the morning to hold a midterm rally there at 2 p.m. ET.

The Justice Department is reviewing allegations against Corey Lewandowski. The DoJ is examining claims Lewandowski profited at the Department of Homeland Security. The inquiry is based on a referral from the DHS inspector general, which shared its findings about Lewandowski’s tenure at the department in recent days.

Are Americans still afraid of socialism? Trump and many Republicans believe that tapping in to decades of fears about “communist menace” will resonate with voters. But the goal of making the Nov. 3 elections a referendum on Democratic extremism is complicated by widespread economic frustration and a bipartisan political shift.

Trump called Elon Musk and asked him to lift Starlink restrictions on Ukraine. The president told the SpaceX chief that he was frustrated the system’s speeds remained capped, which rendered some Ukrainian offensive drones and interceptors powerless against Russian attacks. The system was suffering from low-speed limits early on Friday.
