TOKYO -- Japanese internet infrastructure provider GMO Internet Group said Saturday that it had made an emergency request to the government to adopt "active cyber defense" and proactively counter cyberattacks.

Active cyber defense is a security framework under which the government and relevant authorities work to identify and neutralize attackers' infrastructure and intrusion routes before they can do damage. The company said the action would be the first of its kind, if implemented.

"Private-sector defenses and post-attack responses alone are insufficient to stop sophisticated cross-border cybercriminal groups from stealing people's assets," GMO Internet Group said in a news release.

The move comes after the company's subsidiary, GMO Internet, which operates a web hosting business, detected unauthorized system access by a third party on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the company also announced that data stored on 26,739 servers may have been accessed.

The web hosting business provides services for foreign exchange trading, and, according to the company, the unauthorized access may have resulted in unintended trades being executed on behalf of customers. GMO also announced it had received a demand for money from the third party responsible for the cyberattack, but said it intends to refuse the demand.

GMO Internet said it has so far found no evidence that the personal information held by the company was leaked, or that any accessed information was misused. The company said it does not retain payment information, such as credit card details.
