To paraphrase the tagline from an old horror movie, if the organized far-left anarchy that just terrified Paris and much of Europe didn’t make your skin crawl, then it’s on too tight. Protests that started in France last week saw thousands of businesses looted and burned to the ground as the anarchists danced on the ashes. As the shocking arson, looting and brutal violence against working-class police officers was taking place, wealthy Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) seemed to virtual signal to the anarchists and the far left here in the U.S., while taking a very calculated rhetorical shot at Vice President JD Vance.
Khanna posted on X: “From the high schools of France to the streets of Madrid to the universities of Tirana, young people are telling their governments the same thing: In an age of massive wealth inequality, they want a future they can believe in. …@JDVance says this is what happens when a nation lets in too many immigrants from the global south. He is not just morally wrong, but misreading the moment. This is what happens when nations let wealth and power accumulate in the hands of a few.”
Are they students, Congressman Khanna? Or paid anarchists and thugs? It is quite sad (and quite telling) to see the California lawmaker lecturing Vance for “misreading the moment” while criticizing nations that “let wealth and power accumulate in the hands of a few.”Pardon me, but isn’t Khanna one of those “few” he references? Maybe he’s the one misreading things. When he entered Congress in 2017, Khanna was the fourth richest member from California, with a reported minimum net worth of $27 million.
Today, he is reported to be worth more than $340 million. As someone who grew up in abject poverty and was homeless often as a child, I have been fighting for the rights of the poor and the disadvantaged my entire life. As such, I have never understood how looting, burning and destroying the businesses and livelihoods of store owners was a good thing.
Maybe someone on the left can enlighten me. I honestly begrudge Khanna none of his wealth or privilege in life. How truly nice it must be to marry into a millionaire family, to be placed via connections in the entitlement bubble of what Khanna describes as “the hands of a few.”What is troubling is not the trappings of massive wealth he now enjoys, but rather his blatant hypocrisy. Vance, of course, was not born into money. His childhood, as outlined in his bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” deeply resonates with the working class of our nation.
So why did Khanna drag him into it? Could it be that Khanna has another motivation? Could it be that he has his eyes on the White House and is looking for some one-liners to fire at the presumptive Republican nominee that could then be inserted into his fundraising pitches to be sent out to millions? If Khanna is truly interested in running for president, he might want to talk to a few of the tens of millions of working-class Americans in our country. They, like Vance, are not anti-immigrant. They are pro-sovereignty and pro-protected borders; they are pro-rule of law; they are pro-controlled and vetted immigration.
Those Americans understand that a nation without defined and protected borders will soon cease to be a nation. If he paid attention instead of patronized, Khanna might learn that what these Americans see happening in France and Europe at the moment petrifies them, as they fear such anarchy could soon spread like wildfire across our major cities. If he interacted with actual working-class Americans, they would tell Khanna that France can no longer pay its bills, not only because it is a welfare state, but also because it openly allowed millions into the nation to live off an ever-shrinking government hand-out.
They would further explain to some very basic economics to Khanna: Someone has to work, to pay taxes. Nothing is ever free.
These same working-class Americans would also tell Khanna that many of the anarchists in Europe who are burning and looting businesses, supposedly in protest against elites, are really just exploiting a tragic situation. There is nothing wrong with civil protest — it is not only welcome, but often essential. And while I cannot speak for Vance, I suspect that he would relish the chance to debate Khanna on the best way to ensure the future rights of such Americans.
