China’s state-led funds stepped into the market with the heaviest buying since the April 2025 rout, as authorities ramped up efforts to stem a market freefall.

Inflows into nine exchange-traded funds known to be actively traded by the national team reached 128.7 billion yuan ($19 billion) last week, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s the most since the nearly 140 billion yuan recorded during April 2025, when US President Donald Trump’s trade war battered markets and Beijing took a slew of actions to prop up investor sentiment.

Analysts and investors had earlier warned that such intervention would be insufficient to reverse the negative spiral, but signs are emerging that the buying is helping ease the decline. Chinese stocks swung into gains late Friday as turnover in a basket of ETFs favored by the national team picked up pace.

The ChiNext Index jumped 4.2% on Friday, snapping a nine-session losing streak. The tech-heavy gauge pared an early loss of as much as 3.1% on Monday to trade 1.7% lower as of the mid-day break.
