The Wall Street Journal found broad areas of agreement when it asked 1,500 voters recently about some of the top policy ideas circulating in Congress and on the campaign trail.
Conservatives, liberals and moderates all backed a set of ideas to make healthcare and other expenses more affordable, as well as to curb illegal immigration. Yet some ideas were sharply polarizing and drew staunch opposition along ideological lines.

America often seems bitterly divided by partisanship. But our survey found that there is a broad hunger across the ideological spectrum for the government to do more to help people manage the cost of living through measures such as price caps or other mandates on business. And there is broad agreement that the nation needs both secure borders and a legalization plan for many immigrants currently in the country illegally.
At the same time, some ideas popular on one end of the ideological spectrum are a bridge too far for other voters. Amid agreement on other aspects of healthcare policy and immigration, Medicare for All was rejected by conservatives, while ending birthright citizenship drew strong opposition from liberal and moderate voters.
