Police are holding a man in custody after a cousin of Prince Albert II of Monaco was found dead.

Antoine de Massy, 29, a first cousin once removed of the principality’s head of state, was found in a public garden near the Larvotto district on Sunday. His family reported him missing after he did not attend a family lunch on the same day.

De Massy was the son of Baron Christian de Massy and Cécile Gelabale, and grandson of Princess Antoinette, the Baroness of Massy, who had plotted to depose Prince Rainier III, her brother, and was exiled from the family. Rainier was succeeded by Prince Albert II, his son, in 2005.

In a statement to Agence France-Presse, Monaco’s attorney general said that the man in custody was “merely suspect/witness to events whose nature has yet to be determined”, and that “the possibility of an accident has not been ruled out”.

The public prosecutor said security camera footage had shown the man walking with de Massy on Boulevard du Larvotto shortly before his death.

Police took the man into custody on Monday morning for questioning, and his detention was extended by 24 hours that evening.

De Massy was last seen staggering out of a nightclub in the principality early on Sunday morning, according to newspaper Monaco-Matin.
