UK and US aid funding cuts in Nigeria have impacted the country’s women and girls more than other groups, MPs were told on Tuesday.

Nigeria has been among the hardest-hit countries as many Western governments have slashed overseas development budgets to increase defence spending.

At the International Development Committee’s first hearing on the impact of aid cuts on global health in Africa, MPs were told that UK government cuts had impacted water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programmes in Nigeria significantly, putting women and girls at risk.

“WASH is one of the lowest-funded areas in UK government support to Nigeria. WASH enables girls to stay in school, enables them to manage their menstruation effectively, enables women to give birth safely, and protects the lives of children under 5,” Evelyn Mere country director of Water Aid Nigeria said.

“The UK government says one of its priorities is that it will educate girls, empower women and make sure their voices are heard. It means that the UK says one thing, but with the aid cuts does another,” she added.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) announced earlier this year it would reduce its aid spending in Nigeria by 50.2 per cent over the next three years, from £136 million in 2025 to £68 million by 2029.

Nigeria has also faced substantial funding reductions from the US after the Trump administration shuttered USAID, the government’s foreign assistance arm. This included more than $600 million (£450 million) in health funding.

An FCDO internal impact assessment, published in July 2025, acknowledged that the biggest casualties of African funding cuts would be frontline WASH and women’s health programmes.

“Overall, any reductions to health spending risk an increase in disease burden and ultimately in deaths, impacting in particular those living in poverty, women, children and people with disabilities,” the assessment concluded.
