Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. is working to turn growing Australian interest in sodium-ion batteries into project investments as demand for energy-storage systems grows.

“We do have a very big interest in the sodium batteries,” Zane Zhou, head of CATL for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania said on the sidelines of a conference in Melbourne. “We are in the process of converting the interest into real projects.”CATL launched a new battery-storage system that uses sodium as the key raw material rather than the traditional lithium in June. The company has so far signed agreements to deploy the products, which are less temperature sensitive but also less compact, in the Chinese market as well as Europe.

Global deliveries of the sodium products, which are designed for a longer service life, are slated for June 2027. The bet on sodium batteries comes as the company contends with a slowdown in domestic demand, particularly in its EV segment. A renewed consumption tax on cells in China has also put further pressure on the company’s orders and margins.
