Paribas SA said clients in Europe put aside their reluctance and started engaging more actively last quarter, helping fueling a jump in revenue at the corporate and investment bank.

“Our clients were extremely active in managing their portfolios during the third quarter,” Yann Gerardin, chief operating officer of BNP Paribas and executive chairman of corporate & institutional banking, said in an interview. “What sets this quarter apart from previous ones is that Europe, in particular, was ultimately a bit less wait-and-see.”The Paris-based bank on Wednesday reported better-than-expected results, driven by a 50% jump in revenue from equities trading, as it continues to reap the benefits of investments into the franchise.

BNP Paribas benefited from booming activity in the prime-brokerage business that serves hedge funds, an area where it took over a large numbers of clients from Deutsche Bank AG and Credit Suisse several years ago.

The lender also highlighted a strong performance in the advisory business, including in Europe, which helped lift global banking revenue by 8.4%.

“The groundwork we have laid in recent years to improve the quality and depth of our client franchise is showing more than ever,” Gerardin said. “We now have the necessary diversification in terms of clients, services and geographies, which allows us to achieve this virtuous cycle and perform well in various market condition.”The 64 year-old said BNP continues to gain market share, particularly in Europe, where clients until recently held back because of uncertainty around events such as the Iran war. There’s also momentum among corporate clients in France, Gerardin said, despite the fiscal and political turmoil in the country.

The COO also expressed confidence that Europe is finally making progress on its savings and investment union, after last week reaching a provisional agreement to overhaul rules governing the bloc’s securitization markets. A deal that would unleash billions of euros to finance initiatives in key areas such as defense and climate resilience.
