A federal judge in Washington imposed a fresh block against the Trump administration’s move to use taxpayer money for television ads praising the president, expanding a temporary ban on the media spots.
The ruling on Wednesday from US District Judge Loren AliKhan followed an order from a federal judge in New York barring US officials from taking steps to air the ads or spend more public money on them through Nov. 15 — after the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
AliKhan ordered US officials to stop developing and airing the ads, which were funded by $20 million in taxpayer money. The judge also said the government should take all steps to stop distribution of the ads.
Trump subsequently pledged to pay for video ads with his personal funds — and money from his super political action committee — following ethical concerns about the messages running at taxpayer expense.

Earlier: Judge Extends Ban on Trump Taxpayer-Funded Ads Past Election The case in Washington was brought by the Democratic National Committee, which contends the ads are meant to boost Republicans in the high-stakes contest to decide control of Congress. Democrats argue the use of federal funds allows GOP candidates and political action committees to redirect their money for other purposes in the final weeks of the campaign cycle.
