Secretary Scott Bessent said he and his team are keeping tabs on the state of financing for the artificial intelligence build-out, and played down recent signs of concern.
“We monitor all of this,” Bessent said in a CNBC interview Wednesday when asked about yields on some AI-related debt starting to pop up into double digits. “I don’t think it’s problematic at all because we’re seeing that the neoclouds are a small component of the overall ecosystem.”So-called neoclouds rent out AI infrastructure. One major AI computing provider, CoreWeave Inc., has found itself at the center of intensifying concerns over the resilience of the boom and the hundreds of billions of dollars being borrowed to finance it.
“We’re still seeing the financing getting done — we’re still seeing the deals get done,” Bessent said. “And we’re also seeing companies like Meta decide to finance with equity.”Speaking shortly after the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision, Bessent also reiterated his and President Donald Trump’s confidence in central bank Chairman Kevin Warsh. The Fed stood pat on Wednesday after lifting its key rate in September.
Asked whether he’d view any future Fed rate increase as a policy mistake, Bessent said “that’s not necessarily so.”He cited strong economic growth. He also reiterated his call for policymakers to have an “open mind” in terms of the energy shock to US inflation proving “transitory.”Yields on US debt have retreated from their highest levels in more than two decades in recent weeks, though benchmark 10-year rates remain above 5%. Bessent appeared to connect yield levels with the Fed’s decision before the 2024 presidential election to lower rates, starting with a 50 basis point move.
“The 10-year yield never looked back,” Bessent said. “I always had great respect for the bond market, and as Chair Warsh said in the July decision, the bond market has done a lot of tightening for us.”Many market participants have said the AI financing boom has added to strains on Treasuries. AI companies have flooded corporate debt markets with a combined trillions of dollars of issuance to finance the growth of the industry.
Bessent also reiterated that both he and Trump believe that once the US gets “on the other side” of the Iran conflict, the oil market will be well supplied. He’s argued that that will help alleviate inflation and bring down borrowing costs.
