A fire at a US nuclear defense site in South Carolina that handles radioactive material has been extinguished.
Savannah River Site declared an emergency at 5:39 p.m. local time on Wednesday at the facility located near the city of Aiken, according to a statement. “No contamination has been reported outside the affected facility” and the blaze has already been put out, it said.
As a precaution, the site has been closed to incoming traffic, while rail, river, and air traffic in the vicinity has also been restricted.
The 200,000-acre facility along the Savannah River produced tritium and plutonium for US nuclear weapons during the Cold War, and is still home to several metric tons of nuclear weapons grade plutonium. The Department of Energy announced earlier this year that it was restarting uranium recovery operations at the site.
