As Anthropic correctly pointed out in its initial public offering filing, business use of AI is in its infancy. Many other corporate executives say it will take some time for white-collar workers, especially those who aren’t software engineers, to use the latest tools effectively.

For example, White & Case, a large global law firm with more than 2,000 lawyers, is “having to hold back” its rollout of one of the newest legal assistants made by AI startup Legora because lawyers are hesitant about using so-called AI agents, said Isabel Parker, the law firm’s chief innovation officer.

A gradual rollout will ensure lawyers feel confident in using the new agent, which can handle more complex legal work than the AI agent from Legora that lawyers currently use for tasks such as analyzing and summarizing documents and generating ideas, she said. Unlike simpler chatbots, AI agents can take multiple actions on behalf of the user.

Lawyers “are not the kind of people that easily lend themselves to using AI,” she told The Information’s Laura Mandaro during the WTF Summit, a gathering of senior women leaders in tech and finance. They’re “skeptical, they‘re time-poor, they’re risk averse, and they have a very strong conviction that their expertise is very artisanal...This technology comes along and it's a threat to everything they worked for.”Legora, a fast-growing app privately valued at roughly $9 billion, aims to automate legal work such as reviewing contracts and drafting documents—the kind of paperwork that needs to be error-free.

In an email, Parker said White & Case is investing “significant amounts” in AI tools and that 90% of the firm’s staff uses Legora’s products to some extent. In some cases, using the products can save them as much as 80% of the time it took to manually perform tasks, she said.

Legora’s vice president of engagement, Jillian Burnett, said at the same event that the rapid pace of AI development means that lawyers must constantly learn new tools, which can wear them out.

“We’re working with a very skeptical [lawyer] client base overall, a very busy client base. And when they‘re already having to sit through trainings, different tools…lawyers aren’t necessarily going to want to give you more of their billable time to learn something new,” Burnett told Mandaro at the event.

She said Legora “didn't appreciate that fatigue enough” as a challenge to getting customers to use its tools. Legora has worked to address this by sending its staff to work with lawyers to show how the products can be “hyper-relevant” to their work.

Despite that resistance, Legora seems to be doing all right, and recently said it crossed $200 million in annualized recurring revenue. That implies it generates more than $16 million per month in revenue.

What is forcing change on White & Case lawyers is their clients. Parker said clients routinely ask the firm how it’s using new technologies to speed up work and how it can pass that “value” or new efficiencies to the clients. Now that both White & Case and the in-house legal teams of its clients often use the same AI apps and tools, “there’s nowhere to hide,” she said.

“One thing that cuts through any change fatigue in a lawyer is the client saying, ‘I want this done. Show me how you've been using this [AI tool],’” she said.

In some cases, though, firms may intentionally slow AI use among junior employees to make sure they learn basic skills. For example, Parker said her firm is considering “sacrificing some efficiency” from AI so its junior lawyers can learn to do their work manually before adopting agents that can automate more difficult tasks such as Legora’s Agent Pro.

“Most planes are flown by autopilot now…but you need to make sure that whoever's…in the cockpit does know how to fly a plane,” she said.
