“We will strengthen our support for corporate clients” in the country, Orcel said in a statement Friday, adding that UniCredit plans to increase its capacity to finance German companies’ growth. “I am personally committed to delivering on these promises and to ensuring that our actions match our words.”

A spokesperson for the German bank said it welcomes UniCredit’s “strong commitment to Commerzbank’s customer promise.”The pledge comes as UniCredit seeks to turn its almost 50% holding in Commerzbank into control after a two-year pursuit that was fiercely opposed by the German rival and the government. Berlin has since opened talks with Orcel, with Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil urging him in September that Commerzbank should remain a publicly traded company headquartered in Frankfurt and continues to serve the country’s small and medium-sized companies, both at home and abroad.

UniCredit said the proposed integration would combine the strengths of its existing German unit HVB and Commerzbank. It said it plans to preserve and build on the two lenders’ regional networks and client relationships.
