Japan's Foreign Ministry said Friday that unauthorized access to its systems may have compromised approximately 3,600 records containing personal information, including names and email addresses.

About 900 of the affected records belonged to individuals outside the ministry, according to the Nikkei newspaper.

The ministry detected the breach Wednesday and took steps to block further access and invalidate authentication credentials.

An investigation found that personal information may have been leaked to a third party, although no highly confidential data is believed to have been compromised. Passport systems and travel advisory services were not affected. The ministry pledged to strengthen its cybersecurity measures to prevent similar incidents.

Separately, All Nippon Airways (ANA) said Friday that personal data, including passport numbers, belonging to about 37,800 customers had been leaked following unauthorized access to a contractor's passenger service system, Kyodo News reported.

Ryohin Keikaku, operator of the Muji retail chain, also said up to 27.26 million customer records may have been exposed through unauthorized access to its official app, although names and credit card information were not compromised.

The incidents come amid a series of cyber breaches affecting Japanese companies. Personal information relating to about 260 million people was compromised between April and mid-October, according to data compiled from reports by the government's Personal Information Protection Commission, The Japan News reported Friday.
