Platforms Inc. is facing a UK investigation over concerns that its commercial terms could impose “exploitative” conditions on publishers and advertisers.
The Competition and Markets Authority said on Friday it will examine whether Meta is abusing its dominant position through its commercial terms that could “unfairly harm” businesses using its platforms.
The terms, which Meta planned to revise from Nov. 20 but has put on hold, could allow the US firm to collect content from publishers’ websites without offering them a choice, the CMA said. The terms allow Meta to “then use it to develop and provide its own products and services, including its AI features.”The probe raises a fresh antitrust challenge for Meta as regulators scrutinize how technology companies obtain the vast amounts of data and content to develop AI products. The announcement is the second regulatory setback for Meta in a day after the High Court ruled that the UK media watchdog’s demand for information about the online safety of children was lawful.
“There are no grounds for a competition investigation,” Meta said in response to the probe. “We’ve already committed not to change our terms without consulting publishers and other stakeholders.”Separately, the CMA has also sought information about Meta One, a business subscription service, after the Federation of Small Businesses raised concerns about whether companies would have to pay a subscription fee to post external links on Facebook and“No decision has yet been taken on whether the CMA will take formal action in this area,” the watchdog said.
