The White House is poised to nominate Christopher Mufarrige to the US Federal Trade Commission, according to people familiar with the administration’s plans, elevating him from leading the consumer protection division to become one of the agency’s top policymakers.
Mufarrige would fill a Republican vacancy at the five-member commission alongside Chair Andrew Ferguson and Commissioner Mark Meador.
Any personnel announcements aren’t final until announced by the president, a White House official said. Mufarrige declined to comment.
The White House in January had nominated David MacNeil, the chief executive officer of WeatherTech, for the role. MacNeil withdrew his nomination for the post earlier this month, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing plans that aren’t yet public.
A graduate of George Mason University Law School, Mufarrige joined the FTC in 2024 as chief of staff to then-Commissioner Melissa Holyoak. During the first Trump administration, he worked at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Earlier in his career, he served at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
As director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, Mufarrige has helped set the agency’s priorities and spearheaded dozens of cases targeting unfair or deceptive business conduct. Under his leadership, the FTC reached a record $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon.com Inc. over allegations the company duped customers intog up for its Prime subscription service and made it hard to cancel. In August, the agency filed a new case against Amazon, alleging the company systematically overcharged advertisers by more than $20 billion.
The FTC has also brought cases against Walmart Inc. for allegedly withholding tips and misrepresented wages to drivers, Hims & Hers Health Inc. for allegedly misleading consumers about its products and Live Nation Entertainment Inc. and its Ticketmaster subsidiary for failing to stem the use of automated ticketing bots.
More controversially, the FTC under Trump has challenged the leading professional association focused on transgender healthcare, alleging the group deceived parents about the medical necessity and safety of gender transitions. The World Professional Association of Transgender Health, known as WPATH, has accused the agency of illegal First Amendment retaliation related to its publication of the Standards of Care, a set of influential guidelines for healthcare professionals who treat trans individuals.
